From Asahikawa,
the heartland of furniture, to the World.
The furniture industry in Asahikawa has grown into one of Japan's leading furniture-producing regions, built upon Hokkaido's abundant forests and the craftsmanship of generations of makers dedicated to working with wood.
Established in 1990, the International Furniture Design Competition Asahikawa (IFDA) now marks its 13th edition. Over the course of the previous 12 competitions, IFDA has received 10,084 entries from 79 countries and regions around the world. More than 50 prize-winning designs have been commercialized in Asahikawa and delivered to homes both in Japan and overseas.
Furniture is a form of design that enriches everyday life, shaping both our living spaces and our culture. The theme of the 13th competition, "Origin," invites us to return to the essence of furniture. By re-examining furniture through the perspectives of materials, craftsmanship, and design, we seek works that explore the possibilities of Hokkaido timber, envision the role of furniture in contemporary living, and can be presented to the world as Asahikawa Furniture.
A distinguished panel of internationally active designers and architects will serve as judges, carefully reviewing each submission together with furniture manufacturers from Asahikawa. We hope that these encounters and dialogues will inspire new possibilities in furniture design.
IFDA 2027 is a platform for expanding new challenges from Asahikawa to the world. We look forward to receiving your entries in Asahikawa, the heartland of furniture.
